Americans can hope for weed to be legal in the US by the next 4/20 as a senior senator reiterated his call to legalize recreational marijuana federally.
Chuck Schumer, a senior United States senator from New York and Senate Majority Leader, stated his hopes of federal legalization of recreational cannabis by the next 4/20 on the floor of the upper chamber.
“Hopefully, the next time this unofficial holiday, 4/20, rolls around, our country will have made progress in addressing the massive overcriminalization of marijuana in a meaningful and comprehensive way,” said Chuck Schumer.
A majority of Americans have access to marijuana either medically or recreationally. Since 2012, 16 states and Washington, DC, have legalized marijuana for adults over the age of 21 while 36 states have legalized medical marijuana.
This year on 4/20, the unofficial cannabis holiday Chuck Schumer posted a series of tweets showing his support for the federal legalization of cannabis/weed. He started by wishing Americans on the occasion and announced his work in progress on comprehensive marijuana reform legalization.
The senator expressed his views on the discriminatory impact of the federal prohibition on people of colour in the US.
“For decades, young men and women—disproportionately men and women of colour—have been arrested and jailed for carrying even small amounts of marijuana. I’m working to end the federal prohibition and undo the harms of the War on Drugs”, tweeted Chuck Schumer on April 20, 2021.
