Abbotsford Dispensary Fighting to Stay Open

Weeds, Glass and Gifts, an Abbotsford dispensary, is being taken to court by the city for not having a business licence.

Owner Don Briere said he was turned down by administrators when he tried to get a license for Weeds.

“It’s impossible to get because there are none,” Briere said. “We have tried tried to apply for a business license, we have tried to apply for all this, there is no zoning.”

The city said it won’t give licences to businesses dealing in cannabis, because the substance is illegal.

The Abbotsford Police Department supports the position of the mayor, but doesn’t seem very interested in becoming involved.

Constable Ian MacDonald told Cannabis in Canada “Our understanding is that the city plans to deal with the businesses from a regulatory and licensing standpoint which will not require much in the way of APD resources.”

Briere said Abbotsford should look to Vancouver, where the city is currently regulating and licensing its more than 100 dispensaries, as an alternative to closing his operation.

Briers said, if he needs to, he’ll seek an injunction to stay in business.
