The B.C. city of Langford’s first cannabis dispensary has been closed down by RCMP one day after it opened.
Green Tree Medical Dispensary opened up shop Jan. 16 in the leafy municipality outside the provincial capital.
West Shore Mounties raided the store the following day.
“There is no legal mechanism in Canada which allows for ‘medicinal marijuana dispensaries‘ or ‘compassion clubs’ to sell marijuana to the public,” said West Shore RCMP Const. Alex Berube in a press release.
In nearby Victoria, nearly 40 dispensaries continue to operate with minimal hassle from police. Victoria City Council moved to regulate the industry last year in response to the proliferation of storefronts and is currently working towards issuing business licenses for operations that meet the new rules.
Green Tree also operates a handful of other B.C. storefront locations on Vancouver Island and in the Lower Mainland.
The federal government is expected to table legislation that will legalize adult recreational cannabis use in 2017.
