World’s First Cannabis-Themed Gym Opens In San Fransisco

The signs of cannabis going mainstream are increasing all the time. San Francisco is now home to the world’s first cannabis-themed gym. The name of the workout facility is Power Plant Fitness, and it’s the first gym that allows customers to use cannabis while in the building. The founder, Jim McAlpine, is motivated to break the stereotype of cannabis user being nothing but lazy stoners. “It won’t be a place to get high and just screw around. We are focused on the athletic side, not the cannabis side,” McAlpine said.

McAlpine also started the 420 Games, which is a company that hosts cannabis-themed athletic competitions around the country. The 420 Games started in San Francisco in 2014, and features such events as triathlons, mountain bike races, obstacle courses, golf tournament, and the unique 4.20 mile race.

The gym will allow members to vape and consume edibles inside, while the smokers will only be allowed to use their cannabis on a deck outside, due to a San Francisco law prohibiting smoking in the majority of public venues.

Gym members will first go through a “cannabis performance assessment” in order to find the best method of cannabis use for the individual. McAlpine explains, “We will be helping our members figure out how is best for them to ingest their cannabis.” The gym will have to register as a dispensary if it plans on selling cannabis-infused products on site, which McAlpine intends to do as a results of recently partnering with a cannabis delivery service.
